கரைத்தீவு கிளைப்பிரிவு ஹெக்டர் அப்புஹாமி சந்திப்பு

பாராளுமன்ற உறுப்பினர் ஹெக்டர் அப்புஹாமி அவர்களின் வேண்டுகோளுக்கிணங்க நமது இயக்கத்தின் கரைத்தீவு கிளைப்பிரிவு அவரை இன்று சந்தித்தது. அந்த சந்திப்பில் வண்ணாத்திவில்லு பிரதேச சபையின் தற்கால அரசியல் போக்கு சம்பந்தமாக பேசப்பட்டது. குறிப்பாக மறைந்த தலைவர் பாயிஸ் அவர்களின் மறைந்த (May 23) தினத்தை “புத்தளம் மாவட்டத்தின் கல்வி வளர்ச்சி தினமாக” பிறக்கட்டும் செய்வதற்கான வேண்டுகோள் மற்றும் நமது பிரதேச சபைக்குட்பட்ட பிரதேசத்திற்கு தேவையான குடிநீர் வசதி மற்றும் அருவக்காடு குப்பை திட்டம் மற்றும் அதிகரித்து வரும் கேன்ஸர் நோயாளிகள் சம்பந்தமாக ஆழமாக பேசப்பட்டது.

இக்கூட்டம் நம் இயக்கத்தின் கரைத்தீவு பிரதேசத்தின் தலைவர் அதீக் அவர்களின் வீட்டில் நடைப்பெற்றதோடு, இதிலே சுமார் இயக்கத்தின் உறுப்பினர்கள் பலரும் கலந்துகொண்டார்கள். இறுதியாக “தாங்கள் முஸ்லீம் மக்களுக்கு எதிரானவர் என்ற உண்மையை உங்களது நகர்வுகளை வைத்து மக்கள் புரிந்துகொள்கின்றார்கள்” என்றும், “முஸ்லீம் மக்களின் ஆதரவு தேவையென்றால் அவற்றை மாற்றிக்கொள்வது பொருத்தமாக இருக்கும்” என்றும் தாழ்மையுடன் நம் சமூகம் சார்பாக வேண்டுக்கொண்டோம். #CleanNation #lka #Puttalam #Karaitivu

தூய தேசத்திற்கான (Clean Nation) இயக்கத்தின் பிரதிநிதிகள் கௌரவத்திற்குரிய பாராளுமன்ற உறுப்பினர் ஹெக்டர் அப்புஹாமி அவர்களை கடந்த ஜூலை 10ஆம் திகதி சந்தித்து கலந்துரையாடினார்கள். இந்த சந்திப்பில் தூய தேசத்திற்கான இயக்கத்தின் பிரதி தலைவர் நஸீப் மற்றும் பல முக்கிய உறுப்பினர்கள் உட்பட புத்தளம் நகர சபையின் உறுப்பினர் தில்ஷான் மற்றும் சுது மல்லி ஆகியோர் கலந்து கொண்டிருந்தனர்.
இந்த சந்திப்பு இயக்கத்தின் தலைவர் இஷாம் மரிக்கார் அவர்களின் இல்லத்தில் சனிக்கிழமை இரவு இடம்பெற்றது. தூய தேசத்தின் இலக்குகள் மற்றும் எதிர்கால அரசியல் நகர்வுகள் சம்பந்தமான விளக்கங்கள், கடந்த காலத்தில் பாராளுமன்ற உறுப்பினர் புத்தளம் மக்களுக்கு வழங்கியிருந்த வாக்குறுதிகள், மலையக மக்களுக்கான சம்பள உயர்வு, மாதம்ப பிரதேசத்தில் நடைபெறும் சட்டவிரோத மண் அகழ்வு, நம் மாவட்டத்தில் ஏற்படும் மின்சாரம் மற்றும் பசலை தட்டுப்பாடுக்கான தீர்வு, தேர்தல் சீரமைப்பு சம்பந்தமான ஆலோசனைகள் என்பன விடயங்கள் ஆழமாக பேசப்பட்டது.
அதே நேரம் எம்மைவிட்டு மறைந்த தலைவர் கே.ஏ.பாயிஸ் அவர்களின் இறுதி தினமான மே 23ஆம் திகதி “புத்தளம் மாவட்டத்தின் கல்வி வளர்ச்சி தினமாக” பாராளுமன்றத்தில் புத்தளம் மாவட்ட மக்களின் (எங்களின்) பிரதிநிதியாக பொதுப் பிரகடனம் செய்ய வேண்டும் என்றும் தாழ்மையான வேண்டுகோள் விடுக்கப்பட்டது.
இக்கலந்துரையாடலில் பாராளுமன்ற உறுப்பினர் அவர்களினால் தூய தேசம் என்ற அடையாளத்தோடு எதிர்கால இலக்குகளை எவ்வாறு அடைந்துகொள்வது என்றும், அரசியலில் எவ்வாறு வெற்றி பெறுவது என்றும், ஊழல் நிறைந்த இந்த களத்தில் எவ்வாறு நேர்மையான திட்டங்களை முன்னெடுப்பது என்றும், தங்களது கட்சி எவ்வாறு அவற்றுக்கு உதவி செய்ய முடியும் என்பது பற்றியும் காத்திரமான ஆலோசனைகளையும் வழிகாட்டல்களையும் அனுபவத்தோடு பகிர்ந்துகொண்டார். அதே நேரம் புத்தளம் மாவட்ட சிறுபான்மை இனத்தின் வாக்காளர்கள் கடந்த காலத்தில் விட்ட தவறுகள் என்ற அடிப்படையில் சில விடயங்களையும் ஹெக்டர் அப்புஹாமி அவர்கள் சுட்டிக்காட்டினார்கள்.
கலந்துரையாடலின் இறுதியில் பாராளுமன்ற உறுப்பினரிடம் நாம் வேண்டிக்கொண்ட விண்ணப்பங்கள் அடங்கிய எழுத்துமூல கோரிக்கை ஒன்றினை இயக்கத்தின் பிரதி தலைவர் நஸீப் மற்றும் செயலாளர் அப்ஸல் அவர்களினால் சமர்ப்பிக்கப்பட்டது.
නිර්මල ජාතියක් සඳහා වූ ව්‍යාපාරයේ නියෝජිතයින් ජූලි 10 වන දින ගරු පාර්ලිමේන්තු මන්ත්‍රී හෙක්ටර් අප්පුහාමි මහතා හමු වී සාකච්ඡා කළහ. මෙම රැස්වීමට නිර්මල ජාතියක් සඳහා වූ ව්‍යාපාරයේ නියෝජ්‍ය නායක නසීබ් සහ වැදගත් සාමාජිකයන්, පුත්තලම් නගර සභාවේ සාමාජිකයින් වන දිල්ෂාන් සහ සුදු මල්ලි ඇතුළු ප්‍රධාන සාමාජිකයින් කිහිප දෙනෙක් සහභාගී වූහ.
මෙම රැස්වීම සෙනසුරාදා රාත්‍රි ව්‍යාපාර නායක ඉෂාම් මරික්කාර්ගේ නිවසේදී සිදුවිය. නිර්මල ජාතියේ අරමුණු සහ අනාගත දේශපාලන පියවරයන් පිළිබඳ කරුණු , පසුගිය කාලයේ දී පාර්ලිමේන්තු මන්ත්‍රීවරයා පුත්තලම් ජනතාවට දුන් පොරොන්දු, කඳුකර ජනතාවට වැටුප් වැඩි කිරීම්, මාදම්පේ ප්‍රදේශයේ සිදු වන නීති විරෝධී පස් ඉවත් කිරීම්, අපේ දිස්ත්‍රික්කයේ සිදු වන විදුලිය හා විදුරුමස් හිඟයට විසඳුම, මැතිවරණ ප්‍රතිසංස්කරණය සඳහා යෝජනා ගැඹුරින් සාකච්ඡා කෙරිණි.
ඒ අතරම, අභාවප්‍රාප්ත වූ අපේ නායක කේ.ඒ. බායිස්ගේ අවසාන දිනය වන මැයි 23 වන දින “පුත්තලම් දිස්ත්‍රික්කයේ අධ්‍යාපන සංවර්ධන දිනය” ලෙස පාර්ලිමේන්තුවේ පුත්තලම් දිස්ත්‍රික්කයේ ජනතාවගේ (අපේ) නියෝජිතයා ලෙස ප්‍රකාශයට පත් කරන ලෙස නිහතමානී ඉල්ලීමක් කරන ලදී.
මෙම සාකච්ඡාවේදී පාර්ලිමේන්තු මන්ත්‍රීවරයා විසින්
නිර්මල ජාතියක අනන්‍යතාවය සමඟ අනාගත අරමුණු සාක්ෂාත් කර ගන්නේ කෙසේද, දේශපාලනය සාර්ථක කර ගන්නේ කෙසේද, දූෂණයෙන් පිරුණු මෙම වසමේ අවංක ව්‍යාපෘති ක්‍රියාත්මක කරන්නේ කෙසේද සහ අපේ පක්ෂය එයට සහාය වන්නේ කෙසේද යන්න පිළිබඳව සාකච්ඡාවේදී පාර්ලිමේන්තු මන්ත්‍රීවරයා වටිනා උපදෙස් හා මග පෙන්වීම් අප සමඟ සාකච්ඡා කළේය . ඒ අතරම, හෙක්ටර් අප්පුහාමි විසින් අතීතයේ පුත්තලම් දිස්ත්‍රික්කයේ සුළුතර ඡන්දදායකයින් විසින් සිදු කරන ලද වැරදි කිහිපයක් පෙන්වා දුන්නේය.
සාකච්ඡාව අවසානයේදී, අපගේ පෙත්සම් ඇතුළත් ලිපියක් පාර්ලිමේන්තු මන්ත්‍රීවරයා වෙත පිරිසිදු ජාතියක් සඳහා වූ ව්‍යාපාරයේ නියෝජ්‍ය නායක නසීබ් සහ ලේකම් අෆ්සාල් විසින් ඉදිරිපත් කරන ලදී .
Representatives of the Clean Nation Movement met with Honourable Member of Parliament Hector Appuhamy on July 10, 2021. The meeting was attended by Naseef Awm, Deputy Leader of the Clean Nation, and several key members, including Puttalam Urban Council members Dilshan and Sudhu Malli.
The meeting took place on Saturday night at the residence of Clean Nation leader Isham Marikar. Clear explanations of the goals and future political moves of the Clean Nation, the promises made by the Member of Parliament to the people of Puttalam in the past, the pay rise for the hill country people, the illegal excavation of land in the Madamba area, the solution to the electricity stuck and Compost shortage in our district, and the proposals for electoral reform were discussed in detail!
At the same time, a humble request was made to declare May 23rd, the demise day of the late leader K.A.Baiz, as “The Education Development Day of Puttalam District” in Parliament as the representative of the Puttalam District (ours).
During the discussion, the Member of Parliament shared with them valuable advice and guidance on how to achieve future goals with the identity of the Clean Nation movement, how to succeed in politics, how to carry out reliable and transparent projects in this domain full of corruption, and how their party can assist on this!
At the same time, Hector Appuhami pointed out some of the mistakes made by the minority voters in the Puttalam district in the past.

Proposed 10 Important Reforms

தேர்தல் சட்ட மறுசீரமைப்பு தொடர்பில் பொதுமக்களிடம் இருந்து யோசனைகளைப் பெற்ற எடுப்பதற்காக, பொதுமக்களுக்கு ஓர் சந்தர்ப்பம் தேர்தல் சட்ட மறுசீரமைப்பு பற்றிய பாராளுமன்ற விஷேட குழுவினால் ஜூன் 19ஆம் திகதி வரைக்கும் கால அவகாசம் வழங்கப்பட்டிருந்தது.
அந்த அடிப்படையில் புத்தளத்தில் இயங்கிவருகின்ற தூய தேசம் என்ற இயக்கத்தினால், இலங்கை மக்களின் நலன் கருதி முக்கியமான 10 சீர்திருத்தங்கள் எழுத்து மூலம் முன்மொழியப்பட்டுள்ளது. இந்த ஆவணம் ஜூன் 17ஆம் திகதி தேர்தல் சட்ட மறுசீரமைப்பு பற்றிய பாராளுமன்ற விசேட குழுவின் செயலாளர் திருமதி குஷானி ரோஹனதீர அவர்களிடம் மின்னஞ்சல் மூலம் சமர்ப்பிக்கப்பட்டது.
தேர்தல் காலங்களில் கட்சிகளால் செலவிடப்படும் பணத்தின் தொகை கட்டுப்படுத்தப்பட வேண்டும், மாகாணசபை தேர்தல் முற்றாக ஒழிக்கப்பட வேண்டும், இலத்திரனியல் முறையில் தேர்தல் நடத்துவதற்கும் வாக்குகளை எண்ணுவதற்குமான திட்டம் அமுல்படுத்தப்பட வேண்டும், கட்சிகளுக்கு உரிய தேசியப்பட்டியல் நியமனம் தேர்தல் முடிந்த கையோடு இடம் பெற வேண்டும் போன்ற விடயங்கள் அடங்கிய முன்மொழிவுகள் சமர்ப்பிக்கப்பட்டது.
මැතිවරණ නීති ප්‍රතිසංස්කරණ පිළිබඳ පාර්ලිමේන්තු විශේෂ කමිටුව විසින් මැතිවරණ නීති ප්‍රතිසංස්කරණ සම්බන්ධයෙන් මහජනතාවගෙන් අදහස් විමසීමට අවස්ථාවක් ලබා දෙන ලදී. මැතිවරණ නීති සහ මැතිවරණ ප්‍රතිසංස්කරණ පිළිබඳ යෝජනා ඉදිරිපත් කිරීම සඳහා මහජනතාවට ජුනි 19 දක්වා කාලය ලබා දී තිබුණි.
එම පදනම මත පුත්තලමේ ක්‍රියාත්මක වෙමින් පවතින පවිත්‍ර ජාතියක් නම් ව්‍යාපාරය මගින්, ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ ජනතාවගේ යහපත උදෙසා ඉතා වැදගත් ප්‍රතිසංස්කරණ 10 ක් ලිඛිතව යෝජනා කර තිබේ. මෙම ලේඛනය ජුනි 17 වන දින මැතිවරණ නීති ප්‍රතිසංස්කරණ පිළිබඳ පාර්ලිමේන්තු විශේෂ කමිටුවේ ලේකම් කුෂානි රොහානාදීරා මහත්මිය වෙත විද්‍යුත් තැපෑලෙන් යවා ඇත.
මැතිවරණ කාලවලදී පක්ෂ විසින් වියදම් කරනු ලබන මුදල් ප්‍රමාණය පාලනය කළ යුතුය, පළාත් මැතිවරණය මුළුමනින්ම අහෝසි කළ යුතුය, මැතිවරණ සහ ඡන්ද ගණන් කිරීම විද්‍යුත් ක්‍රමයකින් කිරීමට සැලැස්මක් ක්‍රියාත්මක කළ යුතුයි, ජාතික පක්ෂ ලැයිස්තුවක් පත් කිරීම මැතිවරණ අවසන් වූ වහාම සිදු කළ යුතුයි යන කරුණු ඉදිරිපත් කරන ලදී.
An opportunity was provided to the general public by the Parliamentary Special Committee on Electoral Law Reform to solicit ideas that to be made in Sri Lanka’s current electoral system, structure and election laws!
The general public was requested to submit their proposals on electoral laws and electoral reforms before June 19th. On that basis, the Clean Nation Movement in Puttalam has  for the benefit of the people of Sri Lanka as whole! This document was emailed to Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera, Secretary of Parliament of Sri Lanka Parliamentary Special Committee on Electoral Law Reform on June 17.
Proposals which included the need to control the amount of money spent by parties during election periods, to abolish provincial elections completely, to implement a plan to conduct elections electronically and to count the votes, to appoint the appropriate national list for the parties after the election!

கல்லூரியின் அதிபர் பிரச்சினை சம்பந்தமாக

ஆரம்பத்தில் இருந்து மனித சமுதாயத்தில் கல்வியும் வாழ்ந்து வந்துள்ளது. மனிதராக பிறந்த ஒவ்வொருத்தரும் கல்வி வளர்ச்சியில் பல்வேறு கால கட்டங்களிலும் தமக்கு பொருத்தமானதை, தேவையானதை கற்றுக்கொண்டு வந்துள்ளார்கள்.
கல்வி என்பது குழந்தைகளை உடல் மற்றும் மன வளர்ச்சியில் அறிவு நல்லொழுக்கம் ஆகிய மதிப்புடன் வளர்க்க உதவும் ஒரு சமூக அமைப்பு ஆகும். கல்வியலாளர்கள் கூற்றின் படி இளைய தலைமுறையினரை முறையாக வழிநடத்துவதிலும் சமுதாயத்தில் பங்களிப்பு செய்ய வைப்பதிலும் பாடசாலை முக்கிய பங்கு வகிக்கிறது. அது மட்டுமன்றி சமூகத்திலே மாற்றத்தினை வழிநடத்துவதிலும் பிரதான பங்கு அதற்குறியது.
சமூகத்துக்கான விழுமியங்களை உருவாக்குவதிலும் சமூக மூலதனங்களை ஒற்றுமை, சகிப்புத்தன்மை, ஒருவரையொருவர் சார்ந்து வாழ்தல், நட்புணர்வு ஆகியவற்றை சமூக கட்டமைப்புக்குள் பலப்படுத்துவதிலும் பாடசாலையின் பங்களிப்பு முதன்மையானது மட்டுமல்ல முக்கியமானதும் கூட. நமக்கான சமூகத்தை நேர்மையாக்குவதிலும் நல்லொழுக்கத்திலும் ஆழமான நற்சிந்தனையும் அகலமான அறிவையும் ஏற்படுத்த அது மிக அவசியம் என்பதையும் மறுக்க முடியாது.

தனி மனித பிரச்சினைகளை பொதுவெளியில் பேசுவது நாகரிகமான செயல் அல்ல

அண்மைய தினங்களில், புத்தளம் தில்லையடி பிரதேசத்தில் இந்து ஆலயம் ஒன்றில் உலர் உணவுப் பொதிகள் வழங்கப்பட்ட போது, ஒரு முஸ்லிம் பெண்மணி, புத்தள முஸ்லிம் சமூகம் குறித்து தெரிவித்த தனிப்பட்ட கருத்து ஒன்று காணொளியாக வெளிவந்து புத்தள சமூகத்தில் ஒரு சலசலப்பை ஏற்படுத்தியது நாம் அனைவரும் அறிந்த விடயமாகும்.

 

அந்த வகையில் மேற்படி காணொளியில் தோன்றிய, தனது சமூகம் குறித்து விரக்தி நிலையில் காணப்பட்ட பெண்மணியுடன் கலந்துரையாடி விளக்கங்கள் வழங்கப்பட்ட அதேவேளை, குறித்த பெண்மணி தனது செயல் குறித்து வருந்துவதாகவும், தனது பொறுப்பற்ற செயலின் மூலம் புத்தள முஸ்லிம் சமூகத்தின் மீது ஏற்பட்டுள்ள இழுக்குக்காக மன்னிப்பு கேட்பதாகவும் எதிர்வரும் காலங்களில் அவ்வாறான தவறுகள் நடக்காமல் இருக்க தான் பொறுப்பு கூறுவதாகவும் தெரிவித்து உள்ளார். இந்த விடயத்தில், குறித்த பெண்மணியின் செயலுக்கு காரணமாக அமைந்த மனித மனதின் பலவீனங்களை புரிந்துணர்வு கொண்டு அவரது மன்னிப்பு கோரலை ஏற்றுக்கொள்வோம்.
மேற்படி, தவறுகள் சில நிகழ்ந்த போதும், குறித்த இந்து ஆலயத்தின் மூலம் முன்னெடுக்கப்படும் மனித நேய செயற்பாடுகளை நாம் ஆதரிப்பதுடன் மேற்படி செயற்பாடுகள் தொடர்ந்து இடம்பெறவேண்டும் என்பதுவே எமது அவாவுமாக இருக்கின்றது. ஒரு இந்து அலாயம் என்ற வகையில், உங்களது ஆலயத்தினால் வழங்கப்படும் உலர் உணவுப்பொதிகளை தமது வறுமையின் காரணமாக வாங்க வந்த எளிய மக்களின் உணர்வுகளை, இவ்வாறான காணொளியின் மூலம் சமூக வலைத்தளங்களில் சமூகமயப்படுத்துவது என்பது சற்றும் ஏற்புடைய விடயம் அல்ல என்பதையும், தனி மனித பிரச்சினைகளை பொதுவெளியில் பேசுவது நாகரிகமான செயல் அல்ல என்பதையும் குறிப்பிட்டு தெளிவான கடிதம் ஒன்று தில்லையாடி ஸ்ரீ முத்துமாரியம்மன் கோவில் குருக்கள் மரியாதைக்குரிய தியாகராஜ அவர்களுக்கு ஒரு தெளிவான விளக்கத்தின் பிற்பாடு நம் அமைப்பின் முக்கிய பொறுப்புக்களை சுமக்கும் சகோதரர் பவ்ஸான் Mohamed Fawsan அவர்களால் கையளிக்கப்பட்டது.

ஒரு அவசர தேவையை செய்து கொடுத்துள்ளோம்

சீனாவைவிட கொரோனா வைரஸ் தொற்றுக்கு அதிகமாக பாதிக்கப்பட்டது இத்தாலி தான். சொன்ன பேச்சை கேட்காமல் இத்தாலி மக்கள் அசால்ட்டாக இருந்ததால் ஏராளமான இழப்புகளை சந்தித்து வருகிறது. இத்தாலியில் கொத்து கொத்தாக விழும் மரணத்தை கண்டு உலக நாடுகளே பயந்துவிட்டன. அப்போதுதான் மனித உயிர்களை காக்க வேண்டும் என்பதற்காக கியூபா இத்தாலிக்கு தானாகவே வலிய சென்று உதவிகளை செய்ய தொடங்கியது.
பிறருக்கு உதவிகளை அளித்து உயிர்காக்கும் அளவுக்கு கியூபா ஒன்றும் பணக்கார நாடு இல்லை. இன்னமும் ஓர் ஏழை நாடுதான். ஆனால் ஒரு சில குறிக்கோள்களை வகுத்து அதற்குள் பயணித்து வருகிறது. உதவி செய்வதற்கு பணக்காரர்களாக இருக்கத்தேவையில்லை என்பதுதான் அடிப்படை. அதற்கு சிறந்த உதாரணம் கியூபா.
அந்த அடிப்படையில் புத்தளத்தில் இருக்கும் தூய தேசத்தை நோக்கி நகரும் சமூக பற்றாளர்கள் என்ற வகையிலேயே மருத்துவத்திற்கு தம்மால் முடியுமான ஒரு அவசர தேவையை அவசரமாக செய்து கொடுத்துள்ளோம். இந்த நிதியுதவியை அமைப்பின் பிரதித்தலைவர் சகோதரர் நஸீப் Naseef Awm மற்றும் சமூக விவகார பொறுப்பாளர் சகோதரர் பஸாம் Firdous Mohamed Fasam அவர்களும் இந்த உதவியினை புத்தளம் தள வைத்தியசாலைக்கு இன்று காலை கையளித்தார்கள்.

மக்கள் மாளிகை – சமூக கலந்துரையாடல்

புத்தளம் மாவட்டத்தில் இருக்கும் பிரச்சனைகளில் ஒவ்வொன்றையும் தலைப்பாக எடுத்து பேசும் தொடரான சமூக கலந்துரையாடலின் முதல் கலந்துரையாடல் கடந்த சனிக்கிழமை 10ஆம் திகதி அக்டோபர் மாதம் 2020 மக்கள் மாளிகையில் சரியாக இரவு 8 மணிக்கு ஆரம்பித்து இரவு 10:30 மணி வரை நடைப்பெற்றது.
இந்த கலந்துரையாடலை “மாலை நேர வகுப்புகளும், ஏழை மாணவர்களும்” என்ற தலைப்பில் சகோதரர் SM Isham Marikar அவர்கள் வழிநடத்தினார்கள். தலைப்பிற்கு வலு சேர்க்க சமூக ஆர்வாளர்கள் பலர் கலந்து சிறப்பித்தது மட்டுமல்லாமல், இந்த தலைப்பில் சம்பந்தப்படும் அனைத்து சாராருக்கும் சில ஆலோசனைகளை முன்வைக்க முடிவுகளையும் எடுத்தார்கள்.

The first discussion of a series of community discussions on each of the problems in the Puttalam District was held last Saturday, October 10, 2020 at the People’s House from 8 pm to 10:30 pm.
SM Isham Marikar brother led the discussion on “Evening Classes and Poor Students.” Many social activists attend the discussion and added strength to the topic, they also decided to present some suggestions to everyone who involved on this topic.

Stop Coal Power Plant

The Lakwijaya coal power plant in Norochcholai, ever since its inception has been a threat to the environment and the well-being of the local community .The smoke emitted by the power plant contains harmful chemicals; hence contribute to the pollution of air. The dust that is blown off the coal and fly ash that is openly stored accumulates on the surrounding crop lands and houses. Even the people breathe air that is contaminated with these heavy metals, particulate matter etc. The water that is extracted from the sea and released back with a higher temperature affects marine life of the area, damaging marine ecosystems. If the stipulated mitigation methods are adhered to, most of these impacts could have been minimized to a certain extent.

 

Save Thalangama Tank

Unlawful Construction at Thanagama Wetland Tank

The Thalangama (Talangama) tank had its original spillway (steel gate/weir) at its northern end which drains direction Parliament lake, and received a new larger spillway on the right (eastern) side with a link canal to the Averihena tank and eventually Kelani river. The purpose of this new spillway and link canal is to convey the surplus water from the Thalangama tank via the Averihena tank into the Madiwela East Diversion canal to reduce the flooding risks in the vicinity of the parliament. The Madiwela East Diversion canal starts at the tail end of the Avarihena lake and runs towards Athurugiriya Road and as from there as concrete canal up to river. The main purpose of the recent dredging and construction activities in the lake area served the rehabilitation of the existing irrigation and drainage system. Because of siltation and encroachment the original capacity of the Thalangama tank, which was 50-60 Ac.ft. (61,000-74,000m3) has decreased to 32 Ac.ft. (39,000 m3) causing a water deficit for the farmers, and limiting the area’s flood retention capacity. Although there exists different opinions about the exact numbers, the need for lake desilting and removal of excess vegetation (especially parts of the invasive Wel Atha trees) to increase the water storage and irrigation capacity of the lake was of mutual agreement by all stakeholders, considering however, that the environmental protection status of the area demanded a careful and balanced approach.

After the stop of the dredging at the end of 2017, the construction work continued along the Averihena tank. Local residents at Lake Road wonder how far the dredging has affected local biodiversity. An obvious impact has been the release of plant nutrients from the moved and removed sediments and trees into the water, resulting in a rapid spread of nutrient-loving water hyacinths on the central part of the lake. This has been supported by the dropping from large bird colonies resting overnight on the Wel Atha tree islands of the lake.

The dredging in 2017 reclaimed a significant lake area which was overgrown with trees while preserving a part of them to maintain local biodiversity and night resting places for birds.

Save Wilpattu

The Wild Life and Nature Protection Society (WNPS) said in a statement yesterday that it “was instrumental in the establishment of the Wilpattu National Park and, until the setting up of the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) was directly involved in its administration too. The ‘Watchers’ as the original Game Guards were referred to, were paid and their duties supervised by the Society. As such, the Society has a deep and abiding interest in the welfare of this premier natural heritage and will do its utmost to preserve its integrity both geographically with reference to its boundaries, and as a sanctuary for wildlife.”

With this in mind, the General Committee of the WNPS has called on all of its members and well-wishers to join them in expressing protest against the illegal encroachments that are taking place within the National Park, and in the protected areas immediately surrounding it. There are several such destructive developments going on and the WNPS strongly oppose them irrespective of the ethnicity, religion or political persuasion of the perpetrators of these crimes against the State, and the present and future generations of Sri Lankans, it said.

The statement said the purpose of the rally is not only to draw attention to the illegal destruction of this National, natural treasure, the Wilpattu National Park, but also to urge the Government to take positive action to stop its further degradation, and to restore the Park and protected areas back to their original boundaries.

“It is hoped that not just the membership of WNPS but all nature lovers will answer this call to save Wilpattu, intact, for the future. The forests of Sri Lanka were conserved and gifted to us by our ancestors as they realized how important their existence was to our health and well-being. Should we not preserve them for our children too?,” it asked.
